Founded in 2026 by Rotten Tomatoes-approved Film & Television critic Matthew Simpson, Northern Reel is a site dedicated to the cinema and television of Canada. Every year in Canada, many films are produced, but the refrain from film lovers and cinema goers is that they are hard to find. Born of that, and the fact that Canada makes great movies, Northern Reel exists to help boost the visibility of our great country’s artistic output.

Northern Reel also has contributors across Canada. We acknowledge the treaty lands and traditional territories of Indigenous nations across the country, and that the relationship between these Indigenous nations and their lands has existed since time immemorial and is ongoing.
