Plan C is a heist-gone-wrong movie with a novel twist. Starring Claire Cavalheiro and Daniel DeSanto as low-level criminal siblings Clare and Danny, the film finds them on the run from both police and other criminals, and abetted by a plastic surgeon who only wants to help. You see, the twist is that they haven’t stolen money or gold or bearer bonds, but Clare has boosted a replacement organ for the dying Danny. This gives the film a ticking-clock feel and stakes, as the organ can only remain viable for so long.
Unfortunately, the film is a little underbaked, likely due to budgetary constraints that keep it in a single location for most of the runtime. It is also let down a little by its lead performance from Claire Cavalheiro, whose gritty New England accent ventures over the line and into characature just a few too many times. The supporting cast is rounded out by Jamie Spilchuk, Joris Jarsky, and Kris Holden-Ried, all of whom are solid in their parts as the well-meaning plastic surgeon, the dangerous criminal the siblings owe money to, and the morally bankrupt doctor brought in to perform the surgery. Vivica A Fox also has a small role as a nurse; she’s good, but not in the film enough.
Plan C is a well-intentioned misfire. Writer and Director Scott Cavalheiro’s debut feature offers a lot of promise, but the results are a mixed bag. There’s enough here to make it clear he has talent, both a decent eye, and storytelling sensibilities, but hope for the future isn’t quite enough to elevate Plan C on its own.
